

At the same time, it confirmed the objectives of the project and the measures selected based on the development plan for the historic center of Turku and the university area. On November 22, 2021, the City Government approved the Old Town as a strategic land use project. Old Pasadena is the business district of Pasadena, a lively and diverse city located just ten miles from downtown Los Angeles. There were also interactive events during which the opportunities in the area of the historical centre and the universities were explored more in depth. In the autumn of 2020, there was an open survey in which the city residents had a chance to share their views on the area. The plan was made openly and interactively with city residents and the users of the area. A development plan for the area provides the guidelines for the development work. It will extend from the vicinity of the Old Great Square all the way to Yliopistonmäki, bordered by the Aura River in the west and Hämeenkatu in the east. The development of the Old Town will start in the area of Turku’s historical centre and the universities. Previously, almost the entire area within the walls had been pillaged and destroyed by Anglo-Portuguese soldiers on 31st August 1813, during the War of Independence against Napoleon’s troops.

It was also surrounded by a city wall until 1863, when it was demolished to make way for the new town. It is bordered by three natural elements: Monte Urgull, the Rio Urumea and the The Concha Bay. The Old Town, as its name suggests, is the embryo of today’s city. It is brimming with life and takes a starring role in the best-known local festivals such as the Tamborrada drumming festival.Ī visit to the Old Town is therefore a "must" for tourists in San Sebastián as it gives us the chance to enjoy this area of the city with all our senses.
